Lots of these things listed are things I still do but other people don’t do any more. Some I never did. Some I miss doing and some I don’t.
Things I and Maybe Some People I Know Don’t Do Anymore:
- Choose between an electric and a manual typewriter.
- Yell: “I’ll get it!” when the home phone rings.
- Lose gracefully.
- Win gracefully.
- Use fingernail clippers.
- Hitchhike.
- Look for a pay phone.
- Putter.
- Save toilet paper rolls.
- Make collages out of dried beans.
- Collect impractical collectibles like: cows, state spoons, china flowers, turtles.
- Have a birthstone ring.
- Dog ear a book page to keep the place.
- Decide what animal a cloud looks like.
- Teeter totter.
- Eat snow.
- Make bracelets out of lightening bugs.
- Fry boloney.
- Tell someone he’s full of boloney.
- Play “Rock, Paper, Scissors”.
- Play tether ball.
- Play four square.
- Make a cootie catcher or paper fortune teller.
- Pass notes in school.
- Pass notes in church.
- Put tinsel on the Christmas tree.
- Use an Etch-a- sketch.
- Braid a long braid or two braids on the side.
- Whistle.
- Whittle.
- Change your own oil in the car.
- Have progressive dinners.
- Have Wednesday night prayer meetings.
- Iron sheets.
- Wish on a star.
- Avoid sidewalk cracks.
- Make homemade potpourri out of old flowers.
- Put lemon juice on to lighten your hair.
- Plan a place and time for everyone to meet at the mall.
- Carry a big purse.
- Pay by check.
- Fly kites.
- Day dream.
- Accidentally scratch your LP.
- Fight over the radio station.
- Go Christmas caroling.
- Cry “Uncle”!
- Diagram sentences.
- Memorize phone numbers.
- Ask directions.
- Wear a wig to have a different hair look that day.
- Break a wish bone with someone.
- Drink slowly because there aren’t any refills.
- Keep animals outside where they belong.
- Play kickball in someone’s yard.
- Sing songs together in the back seat of the car.
- Ride in the back bed of the pickup truck.
- Drive a station wagon.
- On long car trips, lie down to sleep: one on the floor of the back of the car, one on the back seat, and one in the back window car sill.
- Take the train to Grandma’s.
- Take the Greyhound bus anywhere.
- Win a goldfish or a little duckling at the fair.
- Stir ice cream before eating it.
- Keep a savings pass book.
- Collect stamps.
- Collect coins.
- Play cat’s cradle.
- Buy yarn.
- Look in the phone book.
- Look in the yellow pages.
- Doodle.
- Use an Easy Bake Oven.
- Keep a dictionary nearby.
- Keep quarters in the car for meters.
- Keep quarters for the Laundromat.
- Do Scavenger Hunts.
- Keep a recipe box.
- Play in puddles.
- Use “Mr. Bubble”.
- Keep a diary with a little key to lock it.
- Play “Cows, Horses and Graveyards” on car trips.
- Wind a watch.
- Tell scary stories around a campfire.
- Wear MIA / POW bracelets.
- Short sheet bed sheets at slumber parties.
- Memorize tongue twisters.
- Tie knots in string licorice and eat them.
- Fidget.
- Make snowmen.
- Know how to find some constellations.
- Know how to find the North Star.
- Know how to navigate without a compass.
- Keep a paper calendar on the wall.
- Keep a paper date book.
- Use an adding machine.
- Count back change starting with the change.
- Use carbon paper.
- Use chalk on a chalk board.
- Monkey around adjusting the rabbit ears on a television set.
- Sing: Janie, Janie, bo-banie, Banana-fana fo-fanie, Fee-fi-mo-manie, Janie!
- Correct someone’s grammar when they are speaking.
- Play with a skip ball or “footsie” toy.
- Play the hokey pokey.
- Use typewriter correction tape.
- Wear a maxi-dress.
- Use ice cube trays.
- Buy non-pierced earrings.
- Look in a kaleidoscope.
- Play Jump Rope games.
- Hum.
How long did it take you to compile that list, my friend! Now that I read it, I miss a lot of those..but I still hum. I bet you do, too. We still use ice cube trays and, amazingly enough, have a typewriter with correction tape that we use. I never did do maxi-dresses, I’d trip and kill myself. Good fun with this. 🙂
